Xero Shoes Men’s Melbourne Casual Chelsea Boots – Wide Toe Leather Dress Shoes – Reviews
Fit depends on your use case
First off id like to stress to Xero (if they’re reading) that I bought these because im a welder and it’s near impossible to find a Zero-drop shoe or boot designed with the industrial environment in mind… this is as close as it gets for the type of welding I do in my shop and that’s being somewhat generous. More on this in a bit.Second and most important part for ANYONE thinking about buying these, the fit. I bought my normal US size and a half size down (as Xero recommends) to see what works best for me. I found that if you’re going to use these barefoot or with thin dress socks then go a half size down. If you’re going to be using anything thicker than a dress sock then buy your normal size. Make sure you measure your foot and NOT just go by regional sizing!Third they look amazing. I was a little worried they would look like clown shoes (like the infamous red wing iron rangers) because of the wide toe box. Well im very pleased to report that they don’t. In fact they’re pretty stylish…. it’s a shame they’re going to be used so heavily at work.Minor gripes and concerns: There were some heavy creases and minor scuffs on the left shoe upon opening one of the two boxes. The other was immaculate. Personally it doesn’t bother me, but some might disagree. Im going to be working in them, nbd. Most of the boot/shoe is smooth leather lined except for the heel which is more of a coarse texture. I understand that’s to prevent heel slippage, but i don’t feel it needed to go the entire hight of the counter and ankle… though the functional sized pull tabs help negate any resistance I might have from slipping these on.Upon first use, the adjustable staps seem pretty useless. Maybe in time the leather will be more pliable and I’ll actually get use out of them, but as of right now they’re just decorative imo. Here’s the BIG ONE. Im woried about the long term use and ware of the outsole since I will be using these in a industrial welding environment. The outsole is thin to keep the boot “minimalist”, but upon looking at them first hand i don’t think it’s too thin for my PERSONAL work environment (no ladders, minimal sparks/spatter). But I also know from images on Xeros site that the welt used on these boots is purely aesthetic and serves no functional purpose, which is honestly sad… worst case scenario is I end up going to a cobbler to get a larger outsole put overtop the original and while i lose the “minimal” aspect, I’ll still retain a Zero-drop platform. Hopefully the upper and sole never separate since they aren’t connected via a functional welt.I’ll check back in a few months in case anything happens, but for now im very very pleased.

Great quality, can’t quite find the right fit
Rather than order a half size down, I first ordered a size 11 like I wear in traditional shoes. The fit was pretty close, except in the big toe which felt really cramped. There seemed to be constant pressure on the front and top of my big toes when I walked around. I know these will stretch a little as they wear in, but I didn’t want to risk waiting to find out with a $150 pair of shoes. So I returned and ordered a half size up, to an 11.5. This completely resolved the issue with the big toe feeling cramped, but the 11.5 is so around the heel and over the top of the foot that these shoes flop around when I walk. I tried wearing heavy wool socks and didn’t make much difference. The built-in adjustment straps don’t provide much adjustment. I really want to like these shoes because they are well build. But I just don’t think the Melbourne style is going to fit. Thankfully they offer a full refund. Looking at trying the Alston next.Worth noting: About 10 years ago I paid hundreds of dollars for a pair of composite safety toe boots custom made for my feet. They told me that the width of my toe box relative to the width of my arch and heel was an outlier, which probably explains why I have always struggled to find shoes that fit my feet. That may be part of my issue here.

Toe boxes started separating within 2 weeks…with 2 different pair – UNACCEPTABLE QUALITY
Xero Mesa trail shoes were my first pair of Xero’s and I love them. So I thought I’d try some other models and ordered up the Xero Melbournes. Once again great fit and comfort, and my feet were happy as they could be. But within two weeks, the toe boxes started separating from the soles on both shoes. I figured there must have some isolated quality issues so I returned and exchanged the defective shoes for another pair. Disappointingly, the same toe box separation has started on this second pair, but this time after only 1.5 weeks! Much as I like the fit and comfort of Xero Shoes, the quality is terrible and I’ll be returning this second pair. Needless to say, I won’t be exchanging for a third pair. Bummer! I thought I had found a new favorite shoe brand. Save your money, and buy something else.

Comfortable and stylish
I’m always seeking a stylish shoe that can accommodate my Mortons toe pain issue and need to have a roomy toe box and width. I love the comfortable fit and look of this boot on my feet! As a woman I find purchasing the Xero men’s shoe size is just the best fit for my feet….however, I don’t want to look manly. So I look forward to more shoes made by Xero in the men’s width, however, for the feminine taste. Way to go Xero shoes!

Good shoe ware out fast
The Melbourne are comfortable shoes. But they ware out less then 4 months.I used them daily for going to work etc.Not traveling or something like that. The respond from xero shoes was that I can use the 5000 miles warranty. And get 40% off a new shoes + sipping . For 4 month of use ? This is very disappointing.

Dissapointed in quality
Upon pulling on the first boot, for the first time, the pull tab ripped right off. This was mentioned by other reviewers as well, it is only glued it. The fit was decent, the toe box width was as expected, ankle width was fine for my fat ankles. Not sure how they would be, as I returned them right away.

Amazing comfort
These are amazingly comfortable from the first time you put them on. I have wide feet and these fit great. I love them so much I purchased a second pair.

Xero Shoes Men’s Melbourne Casual Chelsea Boots – Wide Toe Leather Dress Shoes – FAQ
Are these warm in the winter?
No, they are just a thin piece of leather. I threw my pair away after wearing just a few times. They were very hard for me to get on and once on they were too large for my feet and they flopped around. They were very uncomfortable and a big let down. I have Xero sandals and trail shoes that I like a lot.
I work in a kitchen enviroment. Water and grease on the floors. Are these chelsea boots slip resistant?
The Melbourne sole does have a dual-direction chevron tread for traction on many surfaces. However, we do not currently offer a certified slip-resistant shoe, so we may not recommend this style if that is a requirement for your job.
Did anyone else have scuff marks on theirs? Mine looks like someone wore them for a month, then returned them.
No. If they did then that’s Amazons problem.
