poor quality and finishing; the sole favors foot pronations

from the way the sole is wedged, the foot simply pronates, tilts medially, which causes a lot of problem on all the joints above. As far as the little anatomical arch that a Vibram toe shoe offers, it’s lacking that too.I also did not appreciate the poor quality of the finishing and stitching etc…The only 5 star I would give to this company goes to the marketing agency or mind they use and to their web designer. If only their product would match what they say, I would be in heaven!!

Great minimalist hiking shoes

As a Vibram fan, I was finding it difficult having an outdoors job that did not allow them for “safety” reasons. Normal hiking shoes and boots cause me severe foot pain, knee pain, and hip pain, especially where I have a bunion on my foot. I urgently needed a pair of minimalist hiking shoes to blend in with coworkers while giving my feet the room they need to move naturally. These have done so great. I can hike 8 miles in these with no pain, and didn’t have to break them in, no issues with blisters! I would highly recommend. Can’t comment on how long they will last as I have only had for a week. I usually wear a 8.5 (39 in Vibrams) and a 9 in these fit great.

Good trail shoe

These are great if you have wider feet. Plenty of room for normal swelling that comes from hiking. The back cradles the heel without rubbing. The only downside is I had to add a slim shock absorber insert because there isn’t enough cushion for really rocky terrain. If you’re hiking on a smoother surface or sandier trails you won’t need it. I will be looking at more Xero shoes in the future. Solid shoe at a reasonable price point.Update Oct 2020: the insert ended up not working out. It was slim but raised me foot up just enough to cause rubbing. I’ve used them several other times and find no padding is needed. It just takes a bit to get used to the zero-drop barefoot feel.

Worth the try for feet issues

These are amazing! There is almost no shoe the I can wear without pain… these help so much. The only other thing that worked for me was tons of extra support with super feet in sturdy shoes, good feet inserts in Brooks or military boots. Now I actually have some options and the nature of my feet issues using different shoes at different times can use different muscles… hut these are my favorite of any shoe i have ever bought. And yes I have tried many including vibram toe shoes and all sorts. Typically I would go to a store and try on 20 pairs of shoes before finding one that… well hurt less. These were a risk buying online but with the free return policy I am glad I took the risk… just even walked on slippery dirt and rock trails with these and they did surprisingly well. I honestly would have slipped if I hadn’t had these on.

Mostly good

Love the zero-drop, and I’m pleasantly surprised with the sole, which is minimal but still offers some protection from the feel of rocks/gravel. I followed the advice of others and ordered a full size up, but I think I could have gotten away with a half-size. I plan to add an extra insole to try and take up some room. One thing I do dislike is how the tongue is detached, except for the very end. Not a good design. In my experience the better shoes always have gussets at the edges of the tongue. Usually wear an 8, and I wish had ordered an 8.5, not a 9. Oh well.

Not for me

I bought these because I have a pair of Xero sandals that I really like, but was disappointed by:1. The toe box fit (although the toe box is wider than some shoes it felt snug to me),2. The tongue (it seems super low and was very uncomfortable), and,3. The laces – they aren’t a deal breaker, but were crazy thick and just not ideal.. had I kept the shoes I would have swapped the laces.Returned. Not for me.

The Most Comfortable Hiking Shoe Ever!

I purchased these shoes for a hiking trip in the Smokey Mountains. I climbed to the top of the third highest mountain and down in about 10 hours of straight in these shoes. This was the first time I ever wore them. They didn’t need to be broken in and my feet NEVER hurt in these shoes. The rest of me hurt after that whopper of a climb, but not my feet. They’re shaped a little different than regular shoes, but that’s to give your feet and toes the optimal room they need to move correctly. They’re lightweight and have decent sole grip and yet, the sole is thin enough for your feet to feel what’s going on beneath them. Not in an uncomfortable way though. I highly recommend these shoes to anyone who loves going barefoot and loves hiking, walking, climbing. You truly can’t go wrong with these shoes. I love them and am so happy I got them.

Wide and short.

The sides by the ankle bone were too high and rubbing on that bone. I think it is that way because I had to order a larger size than usual to get the length. I’ve never worn an 8 in my life, but had to get an 8 in this brand to get the length. The toe box was so loose that it barely touches my foot at all. I heard many good things about Xero and was excited about getting this shoe. Maybe it’s good for a wider foot. Please note that I don’t have a narrow foot.

Xero Shoes Women’s TerraFlex Lightweight Trail Running & Hiking Shoe – Zero Drop – FAQ

Where are these made?

Hello there, Thank you for your message and your interest in Xero Shoes! We design all of our shoes here in Colorado. Xero Shoes are made in China. We like to say, “responsibly, ethically, and fairly-made in China.” We visit and work with the factories multiple times per year. We also have an on-the-ground manufacturing agent who oversees things when we’re not there to ensure that conditions are good, workers are treated fairly, and the shoes are made in compliance with all local laws and regulations. The factories we use treat and pay their workers exceptionally well. Companies much larger than ours use these same factories and have spent millions of dollars on audits to assure themselves and their wholesale partners about the quality and conditions. While we would love to manufacture in America, it is literally not possible, in the same way it’s not possible to manufacture the device you’re using to read this answer. Performance footwear manufacturing moved to Asia in the 70s and shows no likelihood of moving back. Note that some companies that claim “made in America” are still sourcing their materials from overseas (or the US companies from which they buy their materials are doing so). Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have other questions about this and we will be really happy to help out!

how do they handle with water

The top and front of the shoe in not waterproof as it is mesh and won’t keep your feet dry in wet conditions such as puddles. The bottoms are completely waterproof though so there is protection if the ground is just wet without puddles.

Does ths shoe have a removable insole?

Absolutely!

Would these be warm enough if worn in cold, dry weather? Under 30 F?

Just wear warmer socks.

Does sand easily filter through the mesh? I hike in deep sand.

We hiked in sandy terrain and had no issues with sand coming through from the outside, however, when it slides in from the top ankle opening it doesn’t come back out.

Are they good for plantar pacitis?

That’s not why I got them, and I don’t have that condition. So I don’t know. But in general, I am not particularly happy with these shoes. The fit is awkward, they move around on the foot too much, but at the same time make my toes go numb.

Any trail runners know if this holds up to running rocky trails?

I feel every rock and stone when I walk or run in these shoes. Really is a bit like going barefoot.

Does anyone with a bunion wear these? I usually have issues when there is an upper in that area. I see there is material right on that specific spot..

I have a small bunion on the left foot and I was very comfortable with these shoes. But I only wear them for working out, not for long period of time. There is a lot of room for the toes, so I don’t think it should be a problem.
